MIVEC Diesel Engine
The ASX’s brand new 1.8-litre turbocharged intercooled diesel engine is the world’s first passenger car diesel to feature variable valve timing. MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control) improves both power delivery and fuel consumption, resulting in lower CO2 emissions.
Intelligent Motion/AS&G
The ASX’s petrol and diesel engines both benefit from Mitsubishi’s Intelligent Motion low-emissions package with low-viscosity engine oil and low rolling-resistance tyres to significantly reduce CO2 emissions as well as fuel consumption. A high-efficiency alternator with Electricity Generation Control delivers maximum charge to the battery during deceleration and braking, avoiding additional engine loading during acceleration and normal driving.
Gear Shift Indicator
The Gear Shift Indicator encourages fuel efficient driving by indicating the optimal gear shifting points to the driver. The horizontal bar-type econometer and range remaining display are continuously updated depending on current driving style, providing a further visual incentive for economical driving.
ABS with EBD
Lateral slippage can easily occur if the rear wheels lock up due to braking hard on slippery surfaces or braking hard when at high speeds. ABS suppresses this by controlling the brakes' hydraulic pressure. EBD adjusts the rear wheels’ braking force to the number of occupants and load to deliver braking force that is ideally matched to almost any situation.
M-ASTC
Active Stability Control
If sensors located throughout the car detect unstable movement, such as lateral slippage, the Stability Control function automatically controls the brakes and engine output to stabilise the car.
Traction Control
If the sensors detect wheel slip when starting on slick surfaces, such as a snow-covered road, the Traction Control function automatically brakes the slipping wheel and governs engine output to enable a smoother start.
Suspension
The ASX’s chassis combines a wide track and long wheelbase with dependable MacPherson strut front suspension and a sophisticated rear multi-link set-up, bolstered by front and rear stabiliser bars, for stable and predictable handling and enhanced ride comfort.
HSA (Hill Start Assist)
When stopped on a slope, HSA (Hill Start Assist) automatically holds the brakes for about 2 seconds after the driver releases the brake pedal and applies the accelerator, to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards.
ESS (Emergency Stop signal System)
ESS (Emergency Stop signal System) reduces the possibility of rear end collisions during sudden braking by the rapid and automatic blinking of the hazard warning lamps to alert vehicles approaching from behind.
Rain and dusk sensors
Rain sensor
Detects moisture on the windscreen and activates the wipers automatically.
Dusk sensor
Switches head and tail lamps on and off automatically depending on the outside light level.
Seven Airbags
To keep occupants in every seat safe in the event of a collision, ASX is available with a 7-airbag system to provide protection from all sides. Curtain airbags extending along both sides protect front and 2nd-row occupants in a side collision, while the 1st-row occupants are additionally protected by front and side airbags. For further safety, a driver's knee airbag helps to protect the legs in a forward collision.
Keyless Operation System
The ASX’s Keyless Operation System literally requires no key to lock/unlock the doors and start/stop the engine. Close-range transmitters read the unique code stored in the key fob in your pocket and allow door unlocking at the touch of a button on the handle (or on the key fob itself if preferred) and engine starting via another convenient dashboard-mounted illuminated button. Locking/unlocking also automatically folds or extends the door mirrors.
Cruise Control
Cruise control allows more relaxed driving on longer journeys when traffic levels allow by letting you remove your feet from the pedals. It is cancelled and driver control regained instantly when either the clutch or brake pedals are pressed.
Rear Parking Sensors
Rear bumper-mounted sensors detect hidden obstacles and send a distance-related audible warning to the driver during reversing manoeuvres.
Reversing Camera
Engaging reverse gear activates a rear-mounted camera which relays a colour image of the area immediately behind the vehicle to the screen of the Kenwood multimedia unit, allowing parking manoeuvres to be made with confidence. It also makes reversing onto a trailer’s tow hitch much simpler and once on the road, a special split-screen feature allows the satellite navigation to be displayed whilst monitoring trailer behaviour during towing.
Bluetooth
The built-in Bluetooth interface system allows safer hands-free operation of a compatible mobile phone whilst driving, employing voice recognition technology and steering wheel-mounted buttons.
Steering Wheel Controls
A number of functions have been grouped together on the steering wheel for convenience and safety. Remote audio controls (left-hand side), cruise control (right-hand side) and Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone control (lower left) are all positioned for easy operation.
Brake Overide System
In the event of the brake and accelerator pedals being pressed at the same time, the engine ECU prevents unintended acceleration by giving priority to the braking operation.
AWC 4WD System
The ASX’s AWC (All Wheel Control) technology oversees the operation of the electronically-controlled on-demand 4WD, ABS and M-ASTC systems, providing an integrated approach to handling, traction and stability. A key component in the drivetrain is the electronic control coupling, which allows varying amounts of torque to be directed to the rear wheels depending on driving conditions and traction needs.
Available only on 4WD variants.

Drive Mode Selector
A rotary controller on the floor console allows selection of three drivetrain mode settings:
- 2WD - only the front wheels are driven for best fuel economy on dry paved roads
- 4WD - automatically shifts up to 30% of the torque to the rear wheels for better traction on slippery surfaces
- LOCK - torque shift to the rear wheels is increased to 50% on demand, to gain maximum traction in extreme weather conditions or in difficult terrain
Available only on 4WD variants.
